A day of very mixed emotions, Shay, Noel and I climbed and stood upon the top of the world, Mount Everest, 8849m. A dream fulfilled, the ordinary achieving the extraordinary.

Shay your laugh was infectious and your smile would brighten up the world wherever you roamed. Keep shining bright, your adventurous spirit lives on in our hearts and minds ♥️.

Life is a journey and I was very guarded about my experiences on Everest. Returning to Nepal to EBC was cathartic and 6 years later when the time felt right for me, being interviewed for 'Why the mountains?' podcast has allowed me share our journey to the top of the world.

Congratulations 🎊 to Niall Cribbin from Kroll, whom brought together a wonderful gathering of family and friends to support two fantastic charities Focus Ireland & Basis Point. Niall is undertaking Peak Lenin in Tajikistan 🗻🧗‍♂️ in June. He is well on target to reach his ambitious fundraising target of €50,000.

Taking in:

⛰️ Gravale 719m
⛰️ Duff Hill 721m
⛰️ Mullaghcleevaun East Top 795m

This is a challenging enough route due to the terrain and you gain and lose height multiple times, perfect training for those who wish to build their mountain endurance legs and mindset....resilence!!

If your planning on travelling to Nepal to Everest Base Camp, it's a 13day challenge of gaining and losing height through the valleys😅. Ideal for climbing high, sleeping low, as you acclimatise.

Join us on our next guided Adventure Travel preparation hike July 6th on Tonlagee, taking in the iconic ❤️ shape lake.

I loved my old pair of Salomon Quest 4 GTX boots. I've had them over 5 years and have looked after them, and in turn, they have looked after me.

I popped into the great outdoors recently and was delighted to see they have salomon in stock, along with a wide range of other boots, trail shoes and summer sandals.

5 years ago....sitting in camp 2 @6400m at the foot of the Lhoste Face. I reflect on what my journey thus far has been like. As you can hear my speech is slow, difficulty getting the words out as a result of the thin air and I'm dehydrated (lips dry) after completing our Acclimatisation rotations.

We will descend through the Khumbu icefall back to EBC where we will rest, recover, refuel and await the weather window.

The weather window is usually on average for two weeks from mid to the end of May. It is when the jet stream winds drop that will allow for climbers to somewhat safely attempt heading into the death zone above 7900m and go for summit @8848m.

The amazing rope fixing team have fixed up to camp 3. Patience is a virtue for all, as the rope fixing team need to fix up to camp 4 to allow for the teams of Sherpa to set up camp and onto the summit. All eyes will be on the weather.

For now we are very happy at how we have acclimatised.

5 years ago, Shay and I ventured through the Khumba Icefall, whilst renowned for being one of the most dangerous sections on the South Side of Everest, it is also one of the most fun. A playground for grown ups....or maybe grown ups who never grew up🤔!!!

Enjoy a glimpse into the next part of our acclimatisation rotation, from Camp 1 @6000m up to Camp 2 @6400m. Known as the Western Cwn or valley of silence.

You are surrounded by the peaks of Nuptse, Lhoste and Everest, you can only be blown away by the ice wall in the distance known as the Lhoste Face. It's everything and more than I could have ever imagined and soaked up in all the adventure books previously read. Pinching myself, it's surreal to be here 🤩.

Camp 1 to Camp 2, whilst it doesn't have much height gain, just 400m. It's about a 8km trek in, but first you must negotiate about 12 open crevasses. Not some ones that you step over on a ladder, no these one's you drop down into the bowels of them and climb back out. It's an exhausting and arduous process covering little to no ground but expending huge amounts of energy.

Shay, never shy of making the most of life, he finds time for a spot of golf. Keeping things light hearted and fun.

It's everything and more than I could have ever imagined and soaked up in all the adventure books previously read. Pinching myself, it's surreal to be here 🤩.

Camp 1 to Camp 2, whilst it doesn't have much height gain, just 400m. It's about a 8km trek in, but first you must negotiate about 12 open crevasses. A snapshot of our trek from Lukla @2815m into EBC @3654m, over 10 days through the valleys.

We climbed High and slept Low to help the body acclimatise to the reduced air pressure, which inturn means less oxygen uptake available for the body to function at its normal capacity. The body being the most ingenious piece of tech that she is, produces more red blood cells to help carry oxygen around the body and such that it acclimatises to its new environment.

Hence, it is why locals and Sherpas whom live in these valleys have a distinct advantage over us, mere mortals living as close to sea level.

Diamox is a medication that can be taken prophylactically. It increases your respiratory rate to reduce the side effects associated with Altitude sickness (headaches, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite). Possible side effects - finger & toes & lips pins and needles, need to toilet more...not great when your trying to get a night's sleep! But like SPF, it is a preventative medication that may help reduce symptoms of AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness).

Keeping well hydrated helps, moving at a slow and steady pace allows the body to acclimatise as you move. If you move at a pace you might be more accustomed too in the Irish hills... in turns means that your body then has to catch up and you maybe more inclined to suffer with Altitude sickness.

Have you ever laminated a paper map?

I have, and I have got it wrong with more contact stuck to me or had a total disaster and ripped the map 🫤.

The trick this time round was....practice 😂...I had 10 paper maps to do!

That and preparation....having a Decal Squeegee was a gift and made it so much easier.

I know you can buy laminated maps, but I had a stock of paper ones and if you know paper ones at all....they don't last just opening and closing them. They are delicate and rip in the folds. Even with a good waterproof case cover I've had paper maps rip.
